Chip Tuning
Chip tuning is the first definition of what modern day ECU Remapping has become. Chip tuning requires the elimination of the Eprom in the ECU and the software is programmed into the chip on the seat. The software within the chip is what’s called remapping, i.e. changing the normal software in a chip. Chip tuning is becoming less and less prevalent on the market place as OBD remapping has taken place allowing remapping to be performed via the OBD port. They are essentially the exact same thing, just OBD port remapping is less intrusive and requires no opening or removal of the ECU. As electronics have progressed further, the most recent creation of ECU’s have what’s known as a locked TriCore processor. This in fundamental terms has eliminated the ability to flash applications via the OBD interface and the only method available is to open the ECU and remap via direct link. It’s not as invasive than chip tuning since you don’t remove the Eprom, the only downside is launching of the ECU for guarantee purposes.
